Fred Ira Baker Jr., 80, of 59 East Housatonic St. died yesterday morning at his home.
Born in Pittsfield on Dec. 24, 1922, son of Fred I. Baker Sr. and Mildred I. Rawling Baker, he attended local schools. An Army veteran of World War II, he served in Normandy and Northern France and received the Purple Heart.
Mr. Baker was a licensed oil-burner technician, employed by McQuin Oil in Albany, N.Y., for 17 years. Prior to that, he had been employed for 24 years by the former Model Dairy.
Active in veterans organizations, he was past district commander of American Legion Post 254 in West Stockbridge, a member of the Dalton VFW and a director of the Imperial Drum and Bugle Corps in Pittsfield during the 1960s. He was a former member of the Elks Club, BPOE 272, and of First United Methodist Church.
He leaves his wife, the former Gertrude D. Ketchum, whom he married Aug. 28, 1945; three sons, Fred I. Baker III of Mosheim, Tenn., Gary Baker of North Adams and Dennis Baker of New Lebanon, N.Y.; four daughters, Virginia Chapman and Wendy Mullett, both of Dalton, Bonnie Gardner of North Adams and Judith Hollingsworth of Pittsfield; two brothers, Kenneth Baker of North Dakota and Lawrence Baker of Cheshire; four sisters, Mildred Ketchum of Pittsfield, Ruth Ditore of Pompano Beach, Fla., Connie Jacobs of the state of Florida and Claudia Sylvani of Pittsfield; 14 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Fred Ira Baker Jr., who died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003, was predeceased by a brother, Edward Baker. He also leaves several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Baker may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires or to St. Peter's Hospital ALS Foundation, both in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield.
