Ethel C. "Bing" Murphy, 81, of 44 Anita Drive, died yesterday morning at Mount Greylock Extended Care Facility following a long illness.
Born in Pittsfield on Jan. 22, 1922, daughter of John and Kiren Erickson Ahlen, she attended local schools and graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1939. She then graduated from the former Berkshire Business College in 1941.
She was employed at Aetna Insurance Co. as a claims adjuster for 21 years, retiring in 1985. Before that, she was employed at General Electric in the Power Transformer Department for several years. She enjoyed gardening, swimming and cooking.
She leaves her husband, Leonard J. Murphy, whom she married Oct. 3, 1944, in St. Mary's Church; two sons, Dennis M. and Peter T. Murphy, both of Pittsfield; one daughter, Lynn Murphy of Pittsfield; one brother, Robert Ahlen of Pittsfield; one sister, Elizabeth Dutton of Rome, Ga.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Gary L. Murphy.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Ethel C. "Bing" Murphy, 81, died Feb. 15, 2003. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Todd and Brian Rilla, Jennifer and Michael Murphy, and Shauna and Calvin Murphy, and her great-grandchildren, Christian and Joshua Rilla. Calling hours will be on Monday from 4 to 7 at the DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME.
The funeral will be on Tuesday at 10:15 from the funeral home, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 at Sacred Heart Church, celebrated by the Rev. James K. Joyce, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, donations in her memory may be made to Boys and Girls Club in care of the funeral home, 40 Maplewood Ave., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
