Edwin R. Grady Jr

Edwin R. Grady Jr., an educator and administrator whose career with Pittsfield schools spanned more than three decades, died Tuesday morning in Quebec, Canada. He was 85.

Mr. Grady, who lived at 213 Park Ave. in Dalton, died at St. Jean Richelieu Hospital in St. Jean Province.

Born in Pittsfield on May 3, 1917, son of Edwin R. and Katherine A. Fitzgerald Grady Sr., he attended Pittsfield schools and was a 1936 graduate of St. Joseph's High School, where he was on the baseball team and captain and quarterback of the 1935 football team. He then played football and graduated in 1942 from the former Hyannis State Teachers College, now Bridgewater State College. He received his master's degree from North Adams State College.

Mr. Grady served in the Army Air Corps as a pilot and instructor during World War II.

He began his educational career as a teacher at Drury High School in North Adams and was the supervisor of high school and elementary intramural programs. Upon moving back to Pittsfield in 1951, Mr. Grady worked in the Pittsfield school system, serving as supervisor of physical education from 1953 to 1970, and as coordinator of physical education and athletics from 1970 to 1981.

He was active in the Massachusetts Teachers Association and while with the Pittsfield Teachers Association, he served on the executive board from 1959 to 1970, as president from 1965 to 1967 and as chief negotiator from 1966 to 1970, spearheading contract talks when teachers were first granted collective bargaining rights.

He retired in 1981 after more than 30 years with the Pittsfield schools, and served on the city's School Committee from 1982 to 1985.

He was active in the development of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association. He also served as an officer in the Massachusetts Association for Physical Education, Health and Recreation.

Mr. Grady also served as a park policeman for the Pittsfield Parks Department for several years. He was an active communicant at St. Charles Church. In addition to sports, he also enjoyed art.

He married the former Alice L. McMorrow on Jan. 15, 1944. She died Sept. 12, 1986.

He leaves four sons, Edwin R. Grady III of Alexandria, Va., Brother Thomas W. Grady, Order of St. Francis, of Brooklyn, N.Y., John J. Grady of Dalton and David F. Grady of Washington, D.C., and four grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Edwin R. Grady Jr., age 85, died Feb. 11, 2003. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Betty Grady of Alexandria, Va.; four grandchildren, Sarah, Andrew, Erin and Michael; his devoted friend, Gisele Pidalue Milotte of St. Jean, Quebec. His brother, Dr. John P. Grady, died in 1988. Calling hours will be Sunday from 4 to 7 at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME. Funeral services will be held Monday at 9 a.m. at the funeral home with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9:45 a.m. at St. Charles Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the St. Joseph's High School Scholarship Fund in care of the funeral home.
