Esther S. Markowitz

Esther S. Markowitz, 78, of 90 Dodge Ave. died Monday evening at home following a long illness.

Born in Bangor, Maine, on Nov. 4, 1924, daughter of Nathan and Fannie Kamner Smith, she was a 1942 National Honor Society graduate of Bangor High School. She graduated in 1943, Tau Epsilon, from the Bangor School of Commerce, and, in 1974, with a bachelor of science degree in education from the former North Adams State College. She moved to Pittsfield in 1955.

Mrs. Markowitz was a business teacher for 20 years at Pittsfield High School, where she established a chapter of Future Business Leaders of America and helped institute scholarships for business students. She retired in 1988. She also taught at Berkshire Community College and, after retiring, part time at the Mildred Elley School of Business. She was first employed as an executive secretary at Dow Air Force Base in Bangor, Fort Totten in Long Island, N.Y., and for Harvey Bryant Shipping Brokers in Manhattan, N.Y.

She was a member of Congregation Knesset Israel, where she was active in many capacities and was past president of Jewish Women's International (B'nai B'rith Women). She also served on scholarship committees at Pittsfield High and Girls Incorporated. She enjoyed pencil art, writing and reading.

She and her husband, Robert Markowitz, were married Sept. 12, 1948, in Young Israel of Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Besides her husband, she leaves two sons, Neal S. Markowitz of Warwick, N.Y., and Frank L. Markowitz of Cherry Hill, N.J.; a daughter, Nancy Schwartz of Alpharetta, Ga.; a sister, Rose Rottman of Kingston, Pa., and four grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Esther S. Markowitz, 78, died Feb. 10, 2003. She is also survived by her loving grandchildren, Michael and Daniel Schwartz and Steven and Alyssa Markowitz; her son-in-law, William Schwartz; her daughter-in-law, Goldie Markowitz, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Betty Lederman. The funeral will be today at 1 at Knesset Israel Synagogue, with Rabbi Lynn Liberman officiating.

Burial will follow in Knesset Israel Cemetery. The family will receive friends during shiva at the family home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 today, tomorrow, Sunday and Monday. Minyan will be held on those days at 7:30.
