Emil J. "Supy" Supranowicz, 78, of 55 Allengate Ave. died Sunday evening at Hillcrest Commons, where he had resided for three days.
Born in Pittsfield on May 13, 1924, son of Paul A. and Jadwiga Murawska Supranowicz, he attended local schools until 1941, when he enlisted in the Marines.
He served as a staff sergeant in the South Pacific and in China. He also served in Washington, D.C., and as a postmaster. He was discharged in 1947. In 1999, he and seven other World War II veterans from Pittsfield received their high school diplomas in a graduation ceremony honoring them for leaving school to serve their country.
A well-known driver for Yellow Cab, Mr. Supranowicz retired in 1986. In the early 1950s, he was proprietor of Supy's Market and, in the 1960s, was a manager for the former Central Markets.
He was a communicant of St. Mary the Morning Star Church. He enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, coin collecting and fishing, and was a Red Sox fan.
He leaves his wife, the former Mary D. Tassone, whom he married Aug. 14, 1948, in Mount Carmel Church.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Ronald P. Supranowicz of Lenox; a daughter, Karen A. Anello of Pittsfield; three brothers, Victor V. Supranowicz of Lanesboro, Leon V. Supranowicz of Pittsfield and Donald P. Supranowicz of Leesburg, Fla.; five sisters, Pauline P. Merrill of Pittsfield, Edith B. Farr of Winterhaven, Fla., Adele D. Lefebvre of Wildomar, Calif., and Theresa L. Morrissey of Belchertown, and five grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Emil J. Supranowicz, who died Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003, also leaves his son-in-law, Sam V. Anello; his daughter-in-law, Sherry J. Supranowicz; and his five grandchildren, Brenda A. Durant, Keith M. Olson, Derek P. Supranowicz, Alyssa L. Supranowicz and Bret J. Supranowicz. He was predeceased by two brothers, John W. Supranowicz and Stanley T. Supranowicz, and a sister, Stephanie H. Mlynarczyk, all of Pittsfield.
The funeral will be tomorrow, Feb. 12, at 10 at DERY FUNERAL HOME, with the Rev. Geoffrey J. Deeker, CSS, pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be today, Feb. 11, from 4 to 7 at DERY FUNERAL HOME. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires or to Elder Services of Berkshire County, both in care of funeral home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
