Melvin Schwartz

Melvin Schwartz, 73, of 22 Marlboro Drive died yesterday morning at home.

Born in New York City on Oct. 19, 1929, son of Leon and Hannah Nichthauser Schwartz, he was a 1946 graduate of the Bronx High School of Science. He earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from New York University. He moved to Pittsfield in 1951.

He served in the New York National Guard from 1948 to 1956. He volunteered five times during the mid-1990s for a month of service with the Israeli army. Mr. Schwartz was employed as an engineer at GE for 39 years, retiring in 1990.

His first wife, the former Bernice Horner, whom he married in 1955, died in 1967.

He leaves his wife, the former Naomi Taylor Ellin, whom he married Aug. 30, 1970; a daughter, Ann Schwartz Unitas of Arlington, Va.; a son, Seth Schwartz of Los Angeles; a stepson, Marvin Ellin of Leverett, and two grandsons.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Melvin Schwartz, age 73, died Feb. 8, 2003. He is also survived by his beloved daughter-in-law Edythe Ellin; his two grandsons, Bradley and Samuel Unitas; his mother-in-law, Sarah C. Taylor; sisters- and brothers-in-law, Evelyn and Philip Azer of LaJolla, Calif., Fran and Stuart Eizenstat of Chevy Chase, Md.; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Sunday at 2 at Knesset Israel Synagogue, 16 Colt Road, with Rabbi Lynn Liberman, spiritual leader, officiating. Burial will follow in Knesset Israel Cemetery, Peck's Road. The family will sit shiva at his home, 22 Marlboro Drive, from Sunday through Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6:30 to 8:30, with minyan in the evening. Memorial donations may be made to the Knesset Israel Hebrew School or to the Melvin Schwartz Memorial Science Fund at Conte Community School in care of DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, 40 Maplewood Ave., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
