Ralph W. Emerson

Ralph W. Emerson, 76, of 13 North Lincoln Ave., Lehigh Acres, Fla., and State Road in Richmond, died Wednesday at Hope Hospice in Fort Myers, Fla.

Born in Pittsfield on March 28, 1926, son of George E. and Emma B. Niver Emerson, he was a 1944 graduate of Pittsfield High School and a graduate of North eastern University with a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering.

Mr. Emerson was the owner of Emerson Contractors Inc. in Pittsfield for many years, retiring in 1995. The firm built many major public, commercial and industrial projects in Massa-chusetts, New York and Connecticut.

He was a member of South Congregational Church in Pittsfield, where he served as a deacon for many years.

In Richmond, Mr. Emerson was a selectman for nine years and on the Finance Committee for six years. He also served on the board of directors and the board of investments for Lenox Savings Bank. Upon his retirement, he was elected to the honorary board of trustees of Legacy Banks.

He enjoyed building and flying radio-controlled airplanes.

He leaves his wife, the former Nancy Mattoon, whom he married Dec. 1, 1951; two sons, Ralph W. Emerson Jr. of Baltimore and Richard F. Emerson of Great Barrington; a daughter, Judith Emerson Dougherty of Ramona, Calif., and seven grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Private committal services for Mr. Emerson will be held at a later date in the Pittsfield Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to either the Shriners Hospital in Springfield in care of WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 220 East St., Pittsfield, MA 01201, or to a charity of choice.
