Richard Edward Vittone

Richard Edward Vittone, 76, of 691 Crane Ave. died Sunday at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield after suffering a stroke.

Born in Pittsfield on Feb. 13, 1926, son of Anthony R. and Sarah E. Miller Vittone, he attended local schools.

He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.

Mr. Vittone was an ironworker for various contractors through Local 12 for 30 years, retiring in 1989. Before that, he had owned and operated Northern Lime Spreading Co. for 10 years, and had worked as an auto mechanic for local dealerships for several years.

He was a communicant of St. Francis' Church. He was a member of the Dalton VFW and the Pittsfield American Legion. A NASCAR fan, he enjoyed racing motorcycles and snowmobiling.

He leaves his wife, the former Jane A. Mezzack, whom he married May 21, 1949; three daughters, Karen M. DiNicola and Dianne E. Mele, both of Pittsfield, and Marcia A. Blair of New Ashford; a brother, Joseph W. Vittone of Fort Myers, Fla.; two sisters, Barbara B. Robitaille of Pittsfield and Lorraine F. Amato of Port Charlotte, Fla., and three grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Richard E. Vittone who died Feb. 2, 2003, will be Thursday, Feb. 6, at 9:15 from DERY FUNERAL HOME, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 at St. Charles' Church by the Rev. Peter A. Gregory, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be tomorrow, Wednesday, from 4 to 8 at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be made to the American Stroke Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701 or in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield. Mr. Vittone is survived by his three adored grandchildren, Kirsten and Peter DiNicola and Sarah Mele. Also survived by his three sons-in-law, Peter DiNicola, Patrick Mele and Thomas Blair. He was predeceased by a brother, Robert A. Vittone.
