Lillian H. Kirchner

Lillian H. Kirchner, 98, of 176 Columbus Ave., Berkshire Town, died Friday at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born in Pittsfield on Nov. 11, 1904, daughter of Reinhold C. and Hedwig W. Boerner Welz, she was a 1921 graduate of Pittsfield High School.
Mrs. Kirchner was a longtime volunteer. During World War II, she rolled bandages and sent gift boxes to the soldiers oversees. She was also active with the local Red Cross.
She served as a hostess in the intensive care/critical care unit at BMC for many years, where she was honored as a volunteer of the month. She started at the hospital in 1979 in the gift shop, then became a phone operator for Tel-Med, the hospital's medical tape service. She also volunteered at the Christian Center, helping serve lunches each day to the children of the former Tucker School.
A member of Zion's Evangelical Lutheran Church, she was a member of its Ladies' Aide Society and Dorcas Circle, and a past president of both its Altar and Evening guilds. She also was a former president of its Hanna Circle and served on its Parish Life committee and as Sunday school teacher for many years. She participated in other church activities, including chairing various events and dinners. For many years, she was in charge of its Puppet Sewing Group, which has sewn hand puppets for sick children at BMC since 1959.
Her husband, Carl F. Kirchner, whom she married Nov. 11, 1925, died in 1970.
She leaves two daughters, Janice K. Lantos of Norton and Maida L. Henriques of Pittsfield; a sister, Anna A. Giddings of Lenox, five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Memorial Service for Lillian H. Kirchner will be held Saturday, Feb. 8, at 11:30 in Zion's Evangelical Lutheran Church, First Street, with the Rev. Dr. Peter D. Boehringer officiating. Following cremation, burial will be in Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours will be Tuesday from 4 to 7 at WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 220 East St. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Shriners' Hospital Burn Center, the Zion's Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, or World Hunger in care of the funeral home. Among survivors are five grandchildren, Geoffrey Lantos, Gregory Lantos, Beth Henriques, Gabrielle Taylor and Giselle Roper.
