James "Jay" Harrison

James "Jay" Harrison, 88, of 37 Westwood Road died Friday evening at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in Pittsfield on Feb. 16, 1914, son of William and Mary Ann Walsh Harrison, he was a 1932 graduate of Pittsfield High School.

An Army veteran of World War II, he served from 1943 to 1946.

Mr. Harrison was employed as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 33 years, retiring in 1976. Following his retirement, he worked part-time at the Berkshire Athenaeum for 10 years.

He was was a lifelong communicant of St. Mark's Church and a 60-year member of its choir. He was an assistant scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 2, hiking more than 100 miles of the Appalachian Trail with his sons and the troop. He was also a member of the Berkshire Lyric Theatre and an avid reader of history and poetry.

He leaves his wife, the former Eleanor M. Johnson, whom he married June 18, 1949, in St. Mark's church.

Besides his wife, he leaves four sons, Robert T. Harrison of Pittsfield, James M. Harrison of San Jose, Calif., Kevin P. Harrison of Orlando, Fla., and Michael W. Harrison of San Diego; a brother, Thomas Harrison of Ramsey, N.J., and seven grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- James "Jay" Harrison, age 88, died Jan. 31, 2003. Jay was a person who was able to connect with people about the aspects of their lives and their interests. He is also survived by his loving grandchildren, Meghan, Caitlin, Jessica, Colin, Alana, Brett and Jenna. He was predeceased by two brothers, William Harrison and Joseph J. Harrison, and a sister, Margaret Fassell. The funeral will be Tuesday at 10:15 at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 11 at St. Mark's Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be Tuesday from 9 until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to St. Mark's Church or to the charity of one's choice in care of the funeral home, 40 Maplewood Ave., Pittsfield, MA 01201
