Nancy Higgins Flory

Nancy Higgins Flory, 63, of 23 Winter St., Fitchburg, died Thursday at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester after a brief illness.
Born in Pittsfield on April 17, 1939, daughter of Michael J. and Laurette Herrick Higgins, she attended Dalton schools, graduating from the former Dalton High School in 1956. She moved to Fitchburg in 1973, after living for several years in Jamaica Plain.
She was employed at the Wallace Civic Center in Fitchburg as an administrative assistant and bookkeeper from 1973 to 1975. She was later a claims specialist at Metropolitan Life Insurance Co., Rome Insurance Co. and Champa Insurance Co., all in Fitchburg, from 1975 until her retirement in 1983.
Mrs. Flory was involved in several volunteer organizations, including former Boston Mayor Kevin White's campaign, the Brookside Avenue Family Life Center in Jamaica Plain, and the Wallace Civic Center Bingo and Lottery and the Wallace Wallopers Bingo. She was the first recipient of the Recognition Award of the Wallace Civic Center for her many years of service.
She was a member of the Cedar Street Retirement Home Board of Directors, the Autumn Airfest Planning Committee, the Ken Keough Memorial Zucchini Festival Planning Committee and held a seat on the Fitchburg Zoning Board of Appeals and the board of directors of the Fitchburg Pulic Library.
She was also actively involved in the local DARE program and was a volunteer for the Massachusetts ARC.
She was a member of St. Anthony di Padua Parish in Fitchburg. She loved to travel, sail and read. She leaves her husband of 41 years, Cecil "Pete" Flory.
She also leaves two sons, Sean P. Flory of Leominster and Brian R. Flory of Fitchburg; one daughter, Anita M. Carbone of Fitchburg; four brothers, Robert Higgins of Venice, Fla., Michael Higgins of Cheshire, Terrance Higgins of Allen, Texas, and Lawrence Higgins of Dalton; one sister, Agnes Burke of Dalton; and 11 grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services will be Monday, Feb. 3, 2003, at the SMITH-MALLAHY-MASCIARELLI FUNERAL HOME, 243 Water St., Fitchburg, Mass. ( www.masciarellifamilyfuneralhomes.net , with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 in St. Anthony di Padua Church, 84 Salem St., Fitchburg. Burial will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery, Fitchburg. Calling hours at the funeral home are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9, Sunday, Feb. 2. Flowers may be sent or memorial contributions may be made to the Fitchburg DARE Program, c/o Officer James Goodchild, Memorial Junior High School, 615 Rollstone St., Fitchburg, MA 01420, or to the Friends of the Fitchburg Public Library, 610 Main St., Fitchburg, MA 01420 or may be left at the funeral home. She also leaves many nieces and nephews.
