Hermann A. Clement

Hermann A. Clement, 94, formerly of 65 Columbus Ave., died yesterday morning at Hillcrest Commons. He was a longtime local businessman and dairy farmer.

Born in Cohoes, N.Y., on Jan. 12, 1909, son of Alexander and Marie Anne Bertrand Clement, he moved to Pittsfield in 1913 and attended local schools.

Mr. Clement started in the dairy business with the former Pittsfield Milk Exchange before becoming owner and proprietor of Clement's Dairy in 1935. In 1959, he and four other dairymen founded the Dairy Center of the Berkshires, a processing and distribution plant, which he was a member for eight years.

He also had co-owned Hiawatha Spring Water in Pittsfield from 1964 until 1980; Peter's Choo-Choo, a miniature train ride in Lanesboro, from 1950 to 1956, and the Woodlawn Café in Pittsfield from 1966 to 1970. He later was a real estate agent with Liberty Realty until 1997.

He was active in the former Pittsfield Exchange Club, and headed the board that oversaw the Easter egg hunts it used to sponsor in Clapp Park. He also was president and director of the Franco-American Club and a member of the board of directors of the former Hillcrest Hospital.

He was a communicant of Notre Dame Church. A Red Sox fan, he enjoyed baseball and playing cards.

His wife, the former Marie E. Berne, whom he married May 25, 1931, died Oct. 8, 1970.

He is survived by three sons, Ronald B. Clement of Pittsfield and Peter B. Clement and Anthony B. Clement, both of Lanesboro; three daughters, M. Bernice Huska and S. Lois Stracuzzi, both of Lanesboro, and Frances J. Wojtkowski of Pittsfield; 26 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Hermann A. Clement, 94, died Jan. 28, 2003. His grandson, S. Ricky Stracuzzi, predeceased him in 1975. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 4 to 7 at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME.

The funeral will be Thursday at 9:15 at the funeral home, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 at Notre Dame Church by Rev. Earl H. Hebert, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the funeral home, 40 Maplewood Ave., Pittsfield. Mr. Clement was predeceased by 10 brothers and sisters.
