Francis J. "Mac" McCarthy, 83, of 1 Colt Road died Monday at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born in Holyoke on April 30, 1919, son of Roy and Rhea Beauchmien McCarthy, he attended Holy Rosary School and graduated in 1937 from Holy Rosary High School there. An Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, he served as a navigator.
Mr. McCarthy joined the state police in 1942 and, after his military service, was assigned to the Berkshire County and the Springfield district attorney's offices as a detective.
He retired in 1962 to take charge of security at the former Sprague Electric Co. in North Adams and, in 1967, became chief of security at GE ordnance, retiring in 1980. An avid sports fan, he was a fan of the New York Yankees and Notre Dame teams.
He leaves his wife, the former Norma A. Rossi, whom he married Aug. 14, 1948; a son, Michael F. McCarthy of Dalton; a brother, William H. McCarthy of Holyoke, and a grandson.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Mr. McCarthy leaves his beloved grandson, Sean McCarthy, a nephew, William H. McCarthy Jr., and a niece, Ellen Bosowicz. The funeral will be Thursday at 11 at St. Mary's Church in Lee.
Burial will be in the spring in St. Mary's Cemetery. There will be no visiting hours. Friends wishing may make donations to the American Cancer Society or to the Lee Regional Visiting Nurse Association in care of KELLY FUNERAL HOME, 3 Main St., Lee, MA 01238.
