George Harvey Culverwell

George Harvey Culverwell, 90, formerly of 43 Crane Ave. died Monday afternoon at Springside of Pittsfield, where he had resided since 1999.

Born in Port Jervis, N.Y., on Sept. 15, 1912, son of Albert and Lillian Heatter Culverwell, he attended Pittsfield schools. He had resided in Dalton for 58 years.

Mr. Culverwell served in the National Guard. He had been employed with Crane & Co. Inc. as a machine tender at its Old Government Mill for 49 years, retiring in 1977.

He was a communicant of St. Agnes' Church and a former member of its Holy Name Society. He was also a member of the Friends of the Sisters of St. Joseph and the Salvation Army. He enjoyed gardening, reading and woodworking.

His wife, the former Helen C. Briggs, whom he married Nov. 30, 1934, died Oct. 16, 2001.

He leaves two daughters, Beverly J. Newbery and Sister Joyce Culverwell of the Sisters of St. Joseph, both of Pittsfield; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- George Harvey Culverwell, 90, who died Monday, Jan. 13, was also predeceased by his brother, Albert Culverwell and his sister, Charlotte Warman. He leaves his son-in-law, Raymond Newbery; his four grandchildren, Robert Newbery, Mary Newbery, Nancy Patterson and James Newbery, as well as his five great-grandchildren, Kaylea Patterson, Stephanie Patterson, Danielle Newbery, Erica Newbery and Devin Newbery.

Funeral services for Mr. Culverwell will be held Thursday, Jan. 16, at 9:15 a.m. from DERY FUNERAL HOME, Pittsfield, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Agnes' Church, Dalton, celebrated by Rev. Christopher A. Malatesta, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Pittsfield.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday, Jan. 15, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Culverwell may be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph or to the Salvation Army, both in care of the Dery Funeral Home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield.
