Anthony G. Russo

Anthony G. Russo, 77, of 49 Peck's Road died yesterday morning at Berkshire Medical Center after a long illness.

Born in Pittsfield on Jan. 7, 1926, son of Frank and Caroline Lucci Russo, he was a graduate of Pittsfield High School.

An Army veteran of World War II, he served in the European theater in Italy, France and Germany.

He was employed by the Pittsfield School Department as head custodian, working at the former Tucker and Crane schools as well as Taconic and Pittsfield high schools. He retired in 1988 after 30 years of service. He had previously worked at O'Connell's Auto as a foreman in the body shop serving Pittsfield and Dalton.

Mr. Russo was a communicant of Holy Family Church. An avid golfer, he was a member of the Pontoosuc and Skyline country clubs for many years. He also enjoyed fishing.

He leaves his wife, the former Stella Gromacki, whom he married Oct. 9, 1945, in Holy Family Church.

Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Joanne Coe of Pittsfield; a brother, Samuel J. Russo of Pittsfield; three sisters, Elizabeth Smigowski of Satellite Beach, Fla., Celia Bruno and Concetta Stankiewicz, both of Pittsfield; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Anthony G. Russo, 77, died in Pittsfield on Tuesday, Jan. 14. Beloved grandfather to Kathy Murphy of Pittsfield, Karen Sacco of Otego, N.Y., and William Coe of Pittsfield, and great-grandfather to Tyler and Brett Murphy and Jordan, Anthony and Brandon Sacco.

Funeral services will be Friday, Jan. 17, at 8:15 from the DWYER FUNERAL HOME, 776 North St., with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 in St. Joseph's Church celebrated by the Rev. Michael Shershanovich, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery.

Calling hours will be Thursday, Jan. 16, from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. Mr. Russo was predeceased by five brothers, James, Joseph, John, Frank and Peter, and three sisters, Dorothy, Mary and Rose. If friends desire, memorial donations may be made to Holy Family Church in care of the Dwyer Funeral Home.
