Francis Edward Brassard

Francis Edward Brassard, 78, formerly of Plunkett Street, died yesterday morning at Hillcrest Commons, where he had resided for three years.

Born in Pittsfield on Jan. 5, 1924, son of Louis F. and Lillian B. Gilbert Brassard, he attended local schools. A World War II veteran, he served in the Army from 1942 to 1946. .

In 2000, he was among several veterans who entered the service prior to graduation to receive a diploma in a special ceremony at Pittsfield High School.

Mr. Brassard was employed as a postal clerk in the Pittsfield post office for 27 years, retiring in 1983. Before that, he worked for the former Robbins and Gamwell Plumbing.

He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church and a member of its Family Society. During the early 1960s, he was the church sexton. He was a lifetime member of Lt. John N. Truden Post 448 VFW and was active in the Boys' Club Alumni Association.

For several years, Mr. Brassard served as a volunteer judge for the Pittsfield Fourth of July Parade. He was a member of the Pittsfield Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps Alumni Association and served on its board of directors and as its transportation officer.

His wife, the former Eileen F. Grady, whom he married May 31, 1947, in St. Mary's Church, died Dec. 2, 1999.

He leaves two sons, former City Councilor James L. Brassard and William E. Brassard, both of Pittsfield; six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Another son, Thomas J. Brassard, died Dec. 27, 1993.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Francis Edward Brassard, who died Monday, Nov. 25, leaves six grandchildren, Tracy Rod of Cheshire; Sean, Joel and Travis Brassard, all of Pittsfield, and Robyn and Brian Brassard of Sacramento, Calif., and two great-granddaughters, Kelsey and Caelin Rod, both of Cheshire.

The funeral for Mr. Brassard will be Wednesday, Nov. 27, at 8:15 a.m. from DERY FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 at St. Mary the Morning Star Church celebrated by the Rev. Daniel B. Brunton.

Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be today from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Brassard may be made to the charity of one's choice.
