Mario J. "Mike" Cassinelli

Mario J. "Mike" Cassinelli, 87, of Allengate Avenue died Wednesday morning at Providence Care Center of Lenox.

Born in Pittsfield on April 7, 1915, son of Carlo and Leiegia Pelazza Cassinelli, he was a 1933 graduate of Pittsfield High School.

He served in the National Guard and the Army during World War II. He was employed by GE as a crane and elevator inspector and in maintenance for 36 years, retiring in 1975.

Mr. Cassinelli was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church. He was a deputy sheriff since 1941 and active in the Knights of Columbus as a third and fourth degree knight. Also active in VFW Post 448, he was a life member and past commander; he had held all offices within the post and assisted with the honor detail and presentation of the colors at funeral services as well as with the Cerebral Palsy Telethon. He was an all-state commander, and a national aide de camp and a member of American Legion Persip Post.

He was honored on Monday as Pittsfield's 2002 Veteran of the Year.

He was chairman of the VFW Voice of Democracy speech-writing competition for 35 years. He enjoyed card games and traveling to Italy, Ireland, Bermuda and Hawaii during his retirement.

He leaves his wife, the former Mary Tobin, whom he married May 8, 1954, in St. Joseph's Church.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Mario "Mike" Cassinelli, age 87, died Nov. 12, 2002. Mike was predeceased by his brothers, Joseph S. "Larry" Cassinelli and Secundo "Cass" Cassinelli. He is also survived by his nephew and his wife, Michael J. and Sue Cassinelli; his niece, Jean L. Murphy; and five great-nieces and two great-nephews.

Calling hours will be Thursday from 4 to 7 at the DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME. Funeral services will be Friday at 8:15 from the funeral home with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 at St. Joseph's Church with the Rev. William P. Murphy, pastor of Most Holy Redeemer Church in Hadley, officiating.

Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the funeral home, 40 Maplewood Ave., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
