John R. Cooney

John R. Cooney, 82, of 39 Maplewood Ave. died yesterday morning at Hillcrest Commons.

Born in Pittsfield on Nov. 6, 1919, son of John M. and F. Irene Scully Cooney, he was a 1937 graduate of Pittsfield High School. He received his baccalaureate degree from Holy Cross College in 1941 and a master's degree from the former North Adams State College in 1955.

He served as lieutenant in the Army during World War II from 1941 to 1946. He also served during the Korean War from 1951 to 1952.

An employee in the Pittsfield School System, he served as a guidance counselor for 29 years, retiring in 1982. Previously, he had taught at New Lebanon High School in New Lebanon, N.Y., and later taught for several years at West Stockbridge Village School.

A communicant of St. Joseph's Church, Mr. Cooney was an usher there and a member of its Holy Name Society. He was a member of the Massachusetts Teachers Association and the American Legion Charles A. Persip Post 68. He enjoyed bowling, reading and was an avid Red Sox fan.

He leaves his wife of 53 years, the former Marion E. Meehan, whom he married Aug. 20, 1949.

Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Ellen M. Cooney of Pittsfield and Lisa A. Enos of Upton; two sons, John E. Cooney of Eldersburg, Md., and David J. Cooney of Humble, Texas; a brother, Dr. Robert T. Cooney of Portage, Wis.; three sisters, Marilyn R. Roach of Minneapolis, Min., Irene M. Filippone of Cedar Grove, N.J., and Anne L. Milone of Bloomingdale, N.J.; and five grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- John R. Cooney, age 82, died Nov. 5, 2002. He is also survived by his grandchildren, John, Matthew, Meaghan and Edward Cooney and Lindsay Enos, and many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be Friday from 4 to 7 at the DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME. Funeral services will be Saturday at 8:15 from the funeral home with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 at St. Joseph's Church with the Rev. Michael Shershanovich, pastor, officiating.

Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire memorial donations may be made to Elder Services in care of the funeral home, 40 Maplewood Ave., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
