William Stanhope

William Sterling Stanhope, 55, of Topeka, Kan., a native of Pittsfield, died Tuesday in Topeka.
Born in Pittsfield on May 7, 1947, son of Irene Auger Stanhope of Pittsfield and the late James Stanhope, he graduated from Pittsfield High School, and received a bachelor of arts in 1970 from Washburn University, where he played football.
Mr. Stanhope was co-owner and operator of Patio, Pool and Fireside for 30 years.
He was a member of St. Matthew's Catholic Church and past president of the National Swimming Pool Institute of America. He was active in youth sports, and was district and state tournament and state board member for USA Kansas Kids Wrestling. He was president of the Topeka Tornadoes Wrestling Club for 10 years and a head coach for the Topeka Sharks Youth Football Team in the Lawrence Football League. He received a Shining Star Volunteer Award.
Besides his mother, he leaves his wife, the former Linnell Odoi, whom he married April 1, 1981; three sons, Trent J. Stanhope, Jason D. Stanhope and Daniel S. Stanhope, all of Topeka; two brothers, James Stanhope Jr. of Houston, and Winthrop L. Stanhope of Woodstock, Vt., and a grandson.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, Aug. 17, at 8:30 a.m. at St. Matthew's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. William Sterling Stanhope will lie in state at PENWELL-GABEL MID TOWN CHAPEL from noon until 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16. A Rosary will be held Friday, Aug. 16, at 4 p.m. The family will greet friends following the Rosary. Memorial contributions may be made to Midland Hospice, 200 SW Frazier Circle, Topeka, KS 66606. The Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave., Topeka, Kan., is in charge of arrangements.
