Frank M. Segala

Frank M. "Chet" Segala, 72, of 38 Hazelwood Terrace died Wednesday at home, following a brief illness.

Born in Malcesine sul Garda, Province of Verona, Italy, on Feb. 11, 1930, son of Frank and Stella Bottura Segala, he emigrated to the United States at age 5 with his family and settled in the Farnams section of Cheshire. They moved to Pittsfield in 1945. He attended schools in Cheshire, the former Adams Memorial High School and graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1948.

He entered the Army in 1951 and served in Korea. He was awarded the Korean Defense Medal with three Bronze Stars, the United Nations Service Medal and the Combat Infantry Badge.

He was employed by GE in the power transformer division and was last employed in the purchasing department of the Naval Ordnance division. He retired in 1991 with 43 years of service. He also assisted his family in the operation of the Imperial Bowling Alleys.

A football player in high school, he maintained a lifelong interest in sports. He was selected to the All-Berkshire Football team by The Berkshire Eagle in 1947 and in 1948 he was selected to the All-Berkshire and All-Western Massachusetts Football Team. Following graduation, he played center with the Tyler Aces and in later years, he was elected to the Monday Morning Quarterback Hall of Fame in Pittsfield.

He served as a volunteer safety officer for Little League baseball and was a volunteer for the Special Olympics Bowling Team with his grandson. He attended every sporting event in which his grandchildren participated.

Mr. Segala was a communicant of Mount Carmel Church and a member of the GE Quarter Century and Pensioners clubs.

He leaves his wife of 50 years, the former Emma T. DiCicco; two daughters, Linda Carnevale and Rosemary Ireland, both of Pittsfield; a son, Francis M. "Butch" Segala of Pittsfield; a brother, Michael Segala of Sunderland; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Ernesto Segala in 1944.

Services will take place Saturday, Aug. 17, at 9:15 at the FLYNN & DAGNOLI-BENCIVENGA FUNERAL HOME, 5 Elm St., followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9:45 at Mount Carmel Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are today, Aug. 16, from 4 to 8. Memorial donations are suggested for the Berkshire Center for Families & Children through the funeral home.
