Rev. Ronald Lussier

The Rev. Ronald P. Lussier, 74, pastor of St. George Church in the Chicopee Falls section of Chicopee, died Monday. He was a former pastor of Holy Family Church in North Adams.

Born in Chicopee on April 2, 1928, son of Eva A. Gemme Lussier and the late Odias A. Lussier, he graduated from Assumption of Preparatory and Assumption College in Worcester. He received his degree in philosophy and theology from the Grand Seminary in Montreal in 1952. He was ordained to the priesthood at St. Michael's Cathedral in Springfield on June 7, 1952, by the late Bishop Christopher J. Weldon.

He was honored on his 50th anniversary to the priesthood on June 9, 2002.

He served as parochial vicar at St. Thomas Aquinas in Springfield, St. Rose de Lima Church in Aldenville, Notre Dame Church in Adams and Notre Dame Church in Pittsfield. He was appointed pastor of St. George Church in 1975, where he served until his death.

He served the Diocese of Springfield on many of its boards. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Elder Council 69 in Chicopee.

Besides his mother of Chicopee, he leaves a sister, Anita M. Perry of West Springfield.

Relatives, friends and parishioners are welcomed to call Thursday from 2 to 5 at his rectory residence at 202 East Main St. in Chicopee Falls. There is parking available in the church lot. A solemn procession and transfer to St. George Church will begin at 6:15 p.m., followed by a Mass of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary at 6:30. Following Mass, Father Lussier will lie in state at the church until 9. A Pontifical Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, Aug. 16, at 11 a.m. by the Most Rev. Joseph F. Maguire, bishop emeritus of Springfield, in St. George Church, 7 Belcher St., Chicopee Falls. Burial will follow at St. Rose Cemetery on Olsen Street, Aldenville. Memorial donations may be made to St. George Church, 202 East Main St., Chicopee, MA 01020. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to ST. PIERRE ALDENVILLE FUNERAL CHAPELS, 13 Dale St., Chicopee.
