Alwina Wood

Alwina Wood, 102, of Providence Care Center, formerly of Northfield and Shelburne Falls, died early Saturday morning at the nursing facility. She was the mother of Helen McCarthy of Lenox.
Born in Shelburne Falls on March 7, 1900, daughter of John and Louise Batzing Geiger, she graduated from Arms Academy in 1919 and attended Northampton Commercial School.
Mrs. Wood was employed by Greenfield Tap and Die and then by Socony Vacuum Co. in Shelburne Falls.
She was a member of United Church of Bernardston, the Bernardston Senior Center and, for more than 50 years, of the Turner Falls chapter of the Order of Eastern Star. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting, especially afghans for her grandchildren.
Her husband, Alvan R. Wood, whom she married Oct. 15, 1927, died in January 1992.
Besides her daughter, she leaves another daughter, Frances Thomas of Olalla, Wash.; a son, Roland Wood of Charlemont; five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be Wednesday, Aug. 14, at 11 at KIDDER FUNERAL HOME, 1 Parker Ave., Northfield, Mass., with the Rev. Paul Koons, pastor of United Church of Bernardston, officiating. Burial will be at 2 in Arms Cemetery, Shelburne Falls. There will be no calling hours.
