David R. Whitman

David Richard Whitman, 68, of 108 Bryant St. died Wednesday at Berkshire Medical Center after a long illness.
Born in Pittsfield on Jan. 25, 1934, son of Charles and Olive Snell Whitman, he was a 1951 graduate of Pittsfield High School.
A Navy veteran, he served on the aircraft carrier Saipan as a meteorologist on a round-the-world cruise. He later joined the Air Force and served at Italian and Turkish air bases.
After traveling the United States, he went to Eureka weather base at the North Pole for the U.S.government, then to the South Pole to work as a junior physicist. He was reassigned to the North Pole with a rank of HQ11.
When he returned to Pittsfield, he operated Gallery 19. He was last employed as a gemologist at Berkshire Hills Coin and Antique.
Mr. Whitman was a member of Mensa. He enjoyed astronomy, gemstones, painting, music and art, animals and bird-watching and his dog, Watson.
He leaves his sister, Olive B. Root, with whom he resided. He was predeceased by a brother, Stephen P. Whitman, and a nephew, John P. Root.
Calling hours will be Saturday, Aug. 3, from 4 to 7 at DERY FUNERAL HOME. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Berkshire Humane Society in care of the Dery Funeral Home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
