Sandra J. Shapiro, 75, of North Hill, Needham, formerly of 41 Tor Court, died Sunday at home.
Born in Schenectady, N.Y., on Oct. 12, 1926, daughter of Edward and Lena Ropeik Vinick, she graduated from Nott Terrace High School in 1944. She attended Briarcliff Junior College and graduated in 1948 from Skidmore College with a bachelor of arts degree. She moved to Pittsfield after her marriage and to North Hill in November 1998.
While in Pittsfield, she served on the boards of Recording for the Blind, the Berkshire County Historical Society and the Berkshire Medical Center Auxiliary. She was active with her synagogue, Temple Anshe Amunim, and served as a trustee and on the board of the temple Sisterhood. She also volunteered at the Cancer Institute for the Berkshires and the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge.
She continued her volunteer work in North Hill by teaching English to employees at her retirement complex and was recently commended for her work by state Sen. David Magnani, D-Framingham, who wrote: "Your students' growing self-respect is the real measure of your work." She enjoyed gardening, reading, painting and travel.
Her husband, Sheldon "Bud" Shapiro, whom she married in 1949, died Oct. 26, 1986.
She leaves two sons, Richard Shapiro of Deerfield, Ill., and James Shapiro of San Diego; a daughter, Nancy Cutter of Needham; a brother, Theodore Vinick of Clifton Park, N.Y., and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1 at Temple Anshe Amunim, with Rabbi Harold Salzmann, rabbi emeritus, officiating. Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice in care of DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME. Friends may pay their respects at the home of Jeffrey and Judith Cook, 9 Palomino Drive, Pittsfield, on Tuesday from 7 to 9, or at the home of Nancy and Steven Cutter in Needham on Wednesday and Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.
