Beatrice P. Anderson, 81, of 320 Pittsfield Road, formerly of 296 First St., Pittsfield, died Tuesday at Berkshire Medical Center. She had lived in Pittsfield from 1975 until she moved to Lenox in 1999.
Born in Mason City, Iowa, on Jan. 7, 1921, daughter of G.W. and Amelia Kee Chamberlain, she was educated in schools there. She continued her education at the University of Iowa and also attended the Kaylor School of Nursing.
She had resided in Pampa, Texas, for a short time while her husband was in the military. She moved to Miami, where she was active in the family-owned Miami Post Publishing Co.
While in the Miami area, she was a member of St. Rose of Lima and St. Mary's Cathedral mother clubs, president of the Miami Children's Theatre sponsored by the Junior League, a Girl Scout leader and C.C.D. president of St. James' Parish, president of the Southeast Coast Deanery and the Miami Diocesan Council of Catholic Women. She installed officers for 30 or more parish organizations of the Archdiocese of Miami. She was president of the Miami United Way, Notre Dame Academy girls parochial school and secretary of the Cotillion Club.
When she moved to Pittsfield, she became one of the founders of the former Fahey Drug Co. on North Street, where she remained as treasurer until 1980.
Mrs. Anderson was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church.
Her husband, John W. Anderson, whom she married in 1941, died March, 28, 1980.
She leaves a daughter, Mary C. Tauer of Pittsfield; two grandsons, and three great-grandchildren.
Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 5 to 7 at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME. Funeral services and a celebration of her life will be held Thursday at 8:15 at the funeral home with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 at St. Joseph's Church with the Rev. Michael Shershanovich, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. She will be most remembered for her love of life and people, her generosity to charitable organizations, and serving as head of many organizations. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Berkshire Humane Society in care of the funeral home.
