Dr. Stanton John McCroary, 96, of 14 Deerfield St. died Tuesday afternoon at home.
Born in Pittsfield on Jan. 19, 1906, son of Frank and Catherine Stanton McCroary, he was a 1929 graduate of Pittsfield High School. He graduated in 1933 from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he served his internship from 1933 to 1934.
Dr. McCroary returned in 1934 to Pittsfield, where he was a general practitioner for 62 years, retiring in 1996. He stopped making house calls in 1988.
A communicant of St. Joseph's Church, he was a former member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine Alumni Association and the Jockey Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and bowling.
His wife, the former Catherine M. Flynn, whom he married Sept. 26, 1945, died Sept. 20, 1992. His first wife, the former Dorothy Donnelly, died during childbirth in July 1940, along with their infant child.
He leaves a daughter, Sheila M. Gralow of Guilderland, N.Y., and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Friday, July 12, at 9:15 a.m. from the DERY FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church, celebrated by Rev. Michael A. Shershanovich, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be held today from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Dr. McCroary may be made to St. Joseph's Church in care of the Dery Funeral Home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
