Norman Oppermann

Norman V. Oppermann Jr., 83, of 44 Huron St. died Saturday afternoon at home.
Born in Gladstone, N.J., on May 30, 1919, son of Norman V. and Mable Mettzler Oppermann, he moved to Stockbridge as a child and was educated there.
An Army veteran of World War II, he served from 1943 in Normandy, Northern France and the Rhineland. He was wounded twice and received two Purple Hearts, as well as three battle stars, the Combat Infantryman Badge and the Bronze Star Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1946.
He moved to Pittsfield in the late 1930s and was employed by GE as a machinist. Following the war, he returned to GE and worked there until retiring in 1980.
He was a 32nd-degree Mason and past master of Occidental Lodge in West Stockbridge. He was also a member of the GE Quarter Century Club, VFW Post 448, the American Legion Persip Post 68 and Disabled American and fishing.
His wife, the former Mary G. Russo, whom he married in 1956, died in 1986.
His first wife, the former Jessie W. Vilot, whom he married in 1941, died March 27, 1997.
He leaves a son, Norman V. Oppermann III of Pittsfield; a daughter, Christine North of Toronto; a stepson, Francis Fruci of Henderson, N.C.; a stepdaughter, Diane Henault of Henderson; 12 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
Calling hours will be tomorrow from 4 to 7 at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME. The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 at the funeral home with the Rev. William D. Furey officiating. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the funeral home, 40 Maplewood Ave., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
