Mary Lou McCatty, 74, of Main Street died yesterday morning at the home of her daughter, Dianne E. Steele of Housatonic.
Born in Giles County, Va., on Feb. 6, 1928, daughter of Jesse C. Carr Sr. and Flossie Mitchell Carr, she attended schools there and graduated from Pearisburg High School. She also received a bachelor of arts degree in teaching from Radford (Va.) University. She moved to the Berkshires 16 years ago.
She taught in public schools in Virginia and Long Island, N.Y.
While in Long Island, Mrs. McCatty did volunteer work with autistic children and, through her church, helped arrange flowers and visits with shut-ins. While here, she was involved with charismatic prayer groups and healing. She enjoyed classical music and frequently attended Tanglewood rehearsals and concerts.
Besides her daughter, she leaves a son, Stephen A. McCatty of Ipswich; a brother, Joseph T. Carr of Bland, Va.; a sister, Marguerite C. Gunn of Radford, and three grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brother, Jessie C. Carr Jr.
The funeral will be Friday morning at 11 at Mechanicsburg Christian Church in Virginia, with burial to follow in Walkers Creek Cemetery in Giles County, Va. A. VEST FUNERAL HOME, 2508 Walkers Creek Valley Road in Pearisburg, VA 24134 is in charge of arrangements there. A memorial service will be held locally on a date to be announced. KELLY FUNERAL HOME in Lee is in charge of local arrangements.
