John L. Thompson

John Leo Thompson, 78, of 61 Chickering St. died Saturday evening at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born in Pittsfield on July 25, 1923, son of Kathryne Reagan Drew, he graduated from Pittsfield High School.
A World War II veteran, he served as a colonel in the Marines from 1942 to 1946, and was stationed at Parris Island, S.C., and in Bougainville, Korea, Samoa, New Zealand, Guadacanal, Okinawa, Pango Pango and occupied Japan.
Mr. Thompson was employed with the former Eaton Paper Co. from 1939 to 1982 as a woodworker and later in the maintenance department until his retirement.
He collected antiques and enjoyed making furniture.
He leaves his wife, the former Beatrice Ann Grizey, whom he married Aug. 16, 1947; a daughter, Patricia A. Cotton of Pittsfield; two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Earl Thompson.
Funeral services for Mr. Thompson will be held Thursday, June 27, at 10 at DERY FUNERAL HOME, with the Rev. John G. Wightman officiating. Burial will be in Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be tomorrow, Wednesday, from 4 to 7. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Berkshire Humane Society in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield.
