John R. Whalen

John R. "Jack" Whalen, 69, of 80 Nancy Ave. died Saturday at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in Springfield on May 27, 1933, son of former Pittsfield Fire Chief Ward G. Whalen and Ethel Finkle Whalen, he graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1951. He attended the University of Massachusetts for two years and graduated from Becker Junior College with a degree in finance. While at Becker, he was president of the 1958 class, earned dean's list honors and was a member of Alpha Omicron fraternity.

An Army veteran, he served in Germany during the Korean War.

Mr. Whalen was employed by the U.S. Census Bureau for four years. Before that, he was a systems analyst for National Cash Register Co. in Pittsfield for 15 years and worked at Berkshire Life Insurance for two years. He also owned Allendale Liquor Mart from 1974 to 1980.

A communicant of Sacred Heart Church, he was a past president of the Pittsfield Junior Chamber of Commerce and past state director of the Junior Chamber. He also served on the board of directors for Hillcrest Hospital. Mr. Whalen was a candidate for City Council in Ward 4 and, in 1990, for state representativeof the 3rd Berkshire District. He was active with fund raising for Pittsfield's Police and Fire departments and served as vice president of the board of United Cerebral Palsy.

He leaves his wife, the former Elisabeth Cristiano, whom he married Aug. 13, 1960; a daughter, Maribeth Kelley of Stoneham; a son, John Jay Whalen of Pittsfield, and two grandchildren.

The funeral will be Wednesday, June 26, at 10:15 from DERY FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 11 at Sacred Heart Church by the Rev. Paul Laflamme, parochial vicar. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery in Lee. Calling hours at the funeral home will be tomorrow from 4 to 7. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Quinn's Legacy Foundation Inc. in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01201
