Earl Mayhew Sr.

Earl Edward Mayhew Sr., 77, of Crooked Pine Drive, Surfside Beach, S.C., a former Pittsfield resident, died Saturday at Conway (S.C.) Hospital.
Born in Plainfield, Conn., on Dec. 12, 1924, son of Clement and Rose Eva Aubin Mayhew, he graduated from Plainfield (Conn.) High School He attended the University of Connecticut and was a college and high school umpire and a member of the Baseball Umpires Association. He moved to Pittsfield in 1963 and to Surfside Beach in 1993.
A World War II Navy veteran, he served in California and played baseball in the military league.
Mr. Mayhew was employed by Brigham Paper Co. He retired in 1990.
He was a member of Surfside United Methodist Church and enjoyed playing tennis at the Myrtle Beach (S.C.) Tennis Club. He was past president of the Exchange Club in Pittsfield.
He and his wife, the former, Jean B. Beebe, were married Nov. 4, 1967.
Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Earl E. Mayhew Jr. of Daleville, Ind., and Mark P. Mayhew of San Marcos, Texas; a daughter, Kathleen A. Anderson of Farmville, Va.; a stepson, Lee Meisenheimer of Pittsfield; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren, and a step-great-granddaughter.
Memorial services will be tomorrow, June 25, at 11 at Surfside United Methodist Church, directed by GOLDFINCH FUNERAL HOME, Beach Chapel.
