Louis Novaris Sr.

Louis Novaris Sr., 97, of 22 Pembroke Ave. died Wednesday evening at Hillcrest Commons.
Born in Marseille, France, on Oct. 4, 1904, son of Joseph and Maria Cougliou Novaris, he moved to Pittsfield with his family as a young boy and attended local schools.
Mr. Novaris was employed as a foreman at the former A.H. Rice Silk Mill for 51 years, retiring in 1972.
He was a communicant of All Souls' Church. He was an avid candlepin bowler and had the first 400 series in Pittsfield. He also enjoyed hunting, and going to Off-Track Betting and Foxwoods Casino.
His wife, the former Rose Serra, whom he married Oct. 29, 1928, in Mount Carmel Church, died Jan. 26, 1999.
He leaves a son, Louis Novaris Jr. of Pittsfield; three daughters, Rita Zopf and Frances Ferguson, both of Pittsfield, and Eleanor Smachetti of Dalton; four sisters, Sylvia Olsen of Newington, Conn., Louise Turgeon of Pompano Beach, Fla., and Irene Lemberg and Lena Cimini, both of Pittsfield; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his brother, John Novaris, and his sister, Carmella Rudzik.
Calling hours at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME will be Friday from 4 to 7. The funeral will be Saturday at 8:45 at the funeral home, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9:30 at All Souls' Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires or to All Souls'Church in care of the funeral home.
