Eleanor Bender

Eleanor M. Bender, 87, of 548 South St. died yesterday at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield.

Born in Amsterdam, N.Y., on Nov. 7, 1914, daughter of John and Anna Soppa Siegle, she graduated from Amsterdam High School. She moved to Dalton in 1949.

Mrs. Bender was employed at the former Montgomery Ward Co. in Pittsfield as a bookkeeper in her younger years and, from 1960 to 1970, was a secretary at Dalton Congregational Church.

She was a member of First Congregational Church of Dalton and its Sew 'n' Such group and Women's Society. She did volunteer work at the Christian Center in Pittsfield for many years. She enjoyed gardening, swimming and reading.

Her husband, Edwin R. Bender, whom she married Oct. 28, 1944, died Sept. 12, 1995.

She leaves two sons, Gerald E. Bender of Cheshire and Robert A. Bender of Dalton, four grandchildren, and a great-grandson.

The funeral will be conducted Saturday at 10:30 from First Congregational Church of Dalton by the Rev. Robert R. Kyte, pastor. Burial will follow in Ashuelot Cemetery in Dalton. Calling hours at BARTLETT-WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME in Dalton will be today, Friday, from 7 to 9. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Dalton Ambulance Fund or the Dalton Congregational Church Memorial Fund in care of the funeral home, 525 Main St., Dalton, MA 01226.
