Theodore J. Cahill Jr., 78, of 14 Howard St. died Sunday at home.
Born in Pittsfield on April 7, 1924, son of Theodore J. Cahill Sr. and Nora Greenwood Cahill, he was a 1942 graduate of St. Joseph's Central High School.
An Army veteran of World War II, he landed in France just days after D-Day and served throughout Europe as a technical sergeant with the Army Corps of Engineers.
Mr. Cahill worked for railroads for 44 years. He was first employed by the former Boston & Albany Railroad while in high school. After his military service, he was employed with B&A's communication and signal department, then with New York Central and Penn Central railroads, prior to the formation of Conrail. He retired in 1985.
He was a communicant of St. Teresa's Church and a past commander and trustee of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 448, where he researched and wrote about the post's history and the achievements of its members. He also was instrumental in gathering the names of veterans for Pittsfield's World War II Memorial and was a longtime member of the post's color guard.
He collected military memorabilia, including a vintage Army ambulance. In 1939, he was named a "Typical American Boy" in a national contest sponsored by the Typical American Boy Association of New York, a group of business and advertising executives.
Mr. Cahill also was a past exalted ruler and trustee of the Pittsfield Lodge of Elks 272, where served on various committees. An avid fisherman and hunter, he enjoyed cooking, and stamp and coin collecting.
He and his wife, the former Esther Francesconi, celebrated their 26th wedding anniversary Feb. 22.
Besides his wife, he leaves three sons, Michael J. Cahill of Vestal, N.Y., Theodore J. Cahill III of Pittsfield and Kevin K. Cahill of Peru; two stepdaughters, Susan C. Lambert of Medford and Maryann Lambert-Barbour of Pittsfield; two sisters, M. Shirley "Sis" Cartier of Bradenton, Fla., and Kathleen C. Jones of Garden City, S.C.; 11 grandchildren, and two great-granddaughters.
Calling hours at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME will be Wednesday from 3 to 7. Funeral services with full military honors will begin at 9:15 on Thursday from the funeral home, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at St. Teresa's Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to the Pittsfield VFW Post 448's effort to build a Korean War Memorial in Pittsfield. Donations may be made in care of the funeral home.
