Helen V. Petell

Helen Virginia Petell, 79, of Roanoke, Va., formerly of Lenox, died Wednesday at Lewis Gale Hospital in Roanoke.
Born in Lenox on May 13, 1923, daughter of Maurice and Alice Hall Weiss, she attended local schools. She was formally trained as an artist, having studied with Leo Blake for four years and sculptor Frances Epping for two years. She also studied ceramics in Scotia and Glens Falls, N.Y. She earned her degree as a dental technician from Albany (N.Y.) Community College.
She did stagework for the Boston Symphony Orchestra at its summer home in Tanglewood in Stockbridge for former BSO music director SergeKoussevitzky and conductor Charles Munch.
Mrs. Petell had her own art and ceramic studio and taught adults in ceramics for the Hoosick Falls, N.Y., school system. Her students' works, which numbered more than 700 per year, were displayed at open houses. She also painted in pastels, oils and watercolors.
A fitness devotee, she earned the Presidential Fitness Award in Ocala, Fla., by swimming 85 miles of laps per year.
She was a communicant of St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Roanoke.
She leaves her husband, Robert A. Petell, whom she married Jan. 11, 1945, at Napier Field, Ala.; three sons, Allen R. Petell, Robert D. Petell and Dr. James K. Petell; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held Friday, June 14, at 1 at St. Andrew's Church in Roanoke, Va., where friends may pay their respects. There will be no calling hours. Interment will in the mausoleum at St. Andrew's. In lieu of flowers, Mass cards for the deceased will be appreciated. The family thanks friends and acquaintances for their prayers and support. Arrangements are by OAKEY'S NORTH CHAPEL AND CREMATORY, Roanoke, Va.
