Laura M. Schilling

Laura May Schilling, 81, formerly of 12 Bushey Road, died Friday at Linda Manor Nursing Home in Leeds, where she had resided since last October.
Born in Pittsfield on July 11, 1920, daughter of Alexander F. and Ethel Tryon Jennings, she was a 1938 graduate of Pittsfield High School. She received her associate's degree in mental health counseling from Greenfield Community College in 1973.
She had resided in West Hatfield from 1971 until moving to Rockridge Retirement Home in Northampton in January 2000.
In 1975, Mrs. Schilling became the first female alcoholism counselor in the Pioneer Valley. She was director of My Sister's House in Springfield, a women's drug and alcohol rehabilitation center, for 20 years. For many years, she was co-proprietor with her husband, Robert F. Schilling Sr., of Schilling Television in Pittsfield.
She was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Hatfield, Civitan of Springfield, the Hatfield Historical Society and, for 10 years, was active in the "learning in retirement" program of the five colleges at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
Her husband, whom she married June 21, 1941, died in 1996.
She leaves two daughters, Elizabeth A. Coombs of Easthampton and Margaret M. Hover of Virginia Beach, Va.; two sons, Robert F. Schilling Jr. of South Deerfield and Daniel Schilling of Pittsfield; seven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Mrs. Schilling was predeceased by two brothers, Richard and George Jennings, and two sisters, Ruth Dowd and Margaret Gray.
The funeral will be conducted Wednesday at 1 at DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, by the Rev. Bonnie Fackre-Cochise, pastor of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Hatfield. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Tuesday from 4 to 7. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in care of the funeral home.
