Edward Szakal

Edward Szakal, 80, of 111 Pleasant St. died Saturday morning at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield.
Born in Akron, Ohio, on May 18, 1921, son of Paul and Helen Farkas Szakal, he attended schools there and moved to the Berkshires in 1945.
A Navy veteran of World War II, he served as a gunner's mate, first class, aboard several ships, including the USS Arkansas, USS Clarence K. Bronson and USS Amsterdam. He saw action in the Pacific theater and participated in the liberation of the Philippines.
A printer, he was employed by Eagle Printing & Binding Co. for 37 years and by the Berkshire Courier for three years. Most recently, he had worked for 12 years as a mason tender with his late friend and associate, Francis Conroy.
He attended Grace Episcopal Church and was a member of the Dalton Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Dalton American Legion. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and making and painting ceramic pieces.
He and his wife, the former Julia Nicholas, were married Sept. 4, 1965, in Brattleboro, Vt.
Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Charles J. Kulas of Dalton and Edwin R. Kulas of Auburn, Wash.; a daughter, Mary E. Ferrell of Dalton, and four grandchildren. His granddaughter, Lindsey Marie Ferrell, died March 2, 2002.
Calling hours at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME will be tomorrow, Tuesday, from 4 to 7. The funeral will be Wednesday at 9 at Grace Episcopal Church in Dalton. Burial with full military honors will follow in Ashuelot Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Lindsey Marie Ferrell Scholarship in care of the funeral home.
