Betty N. Turetsky

Betty N. Turetsky, 86, of 329 Pittsfield Road died Sunday evening at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Sept. 8, 1915, daughter of Joseph and Yetta Wicker Beck, she attended schools in New York and later attended Berkshire Community College. She moved to Pittsfield in 1976.

Mrs. Turetsky and her husband, Philip Turetsky, operated an egg farm in Perrineville, N.J. While there, she was the first president of the Sisterhood of Young Hebrew Farmers and founder of the Rural Study Group. She also was employed as a nursery school teacher in Perrineville and Roosevelt, N.J., for several years, and had been employed with McGraw-Hill Publishing Co. in New Jersey. When her husband returned to work in New York City, she continued to run the family farm.

A member of Congregation Knesset Israel, she was active in its sisterhood and Hadassah, and operated its Judaic Shop. She also had been activein her family's floral business, Lakeview Florist, in Pittsfield and Dalton. She enjoyed singing and listening to music, and was active in a theater group while in New Jersey.

Her husband, Philip Turetsky, whom she married June 7, 1936, died Sept. 1, 1998.

She leaves two sons, Gary Turetsky of Dalton and Michael Turetsky of East Brunswick, N.J.; a brother, William Beck of Brooklyn, N.Y.; four granddaughters and one great-grandson.

The funeral will be Tuesday at 1 at Knesset Israel Synagogue, 16 Colt Road, with Rabbi David Small, spiritual leader of Knesset Israel, officiating. Burial will follow in Knesset Israel Cemetery on Peck's Road, Pittsfield. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to Sinai Academy in care of DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME. The family will receive friends at the home of Gary and Bernice Turetsky, 955 Main St., Dalton, on Tuesday from 6 to 8:30 p.m. with minyan being observed at 8; Wednesday from 1 to 3 p.m.; Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m., and Friday from 2 to 4 p.m.
