Sonya Wessel

Sonya Wessel, 76, of 98 Golden Hill Road died Friday morning at home.
Born in New York City on Jan. 27, 1926, daughter of Joseph O. and Ruth Boardman Chassell, she was raised in Rochester, N.Y., and Bennington, Vt., and graduated in 1942 from Putney (Vt.) School and in 1946 from Bennington College.
Mrs. Wessel resided in England for 36 years and raised her family there. She moved to Lenox in 1991, where she and her husband, Michael, operated Summer Hill Farm bed-and-breakfast for 10 years until moving to Lenox Dale in January. She taught in Newton and in England, and was an active member of the Morris School Council in Lenox.
She enjoyed poetry and pottery and achieved an advanced level certificate in the latter in England. After returning to the United States, she pursued that hobby, first with Shirley Fowler in Lenox and then at Interlaken School of Art. An exhibition of her work was held there recently.
She also enjoyed collecting antiques and art.
She leaves her husband, Michael F. Wessel, whom she married in July 1991 in England; two sons, Kelty Peter Chassell Caston of England and Ross Christopher Olin Caston of Australia; a daughter, Cathy Caston Drumm of Lenox Dale; a brother Robert J. Chassell of Lenox Dale; two sisters, Anstiss Chassell Nadler of New Jersey and Karen Chassell Ringwald of New York, and four grandchildren.
A memorial service for Mrs. Wessel will be conducted tomorrow, April 9, at 11 at the Church on the Hill in Lenox by the Rev. Lois Rose of Great Barrington. Burial of her ashes will follow in Mountain View Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. ROCHE FUNERAL HOME is in charge of arrangements.
