Frank Pakiela Jr.

Frank R. Pakiela Jr., 77, of 147 Alfred Drive died Saturday at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in Buffalo, N.Y., on April 21, 1924, son of Franciszek and Martha Kacikowska Pakiela, he graduated from Emerson Vocational High School in 1942. He also graduated from the American Radio Institute and attended Erie County Technical Institute in Electronics, both in Buffalo.

He was a World War II Army veteran, serving as a sergeant with the 727th Signal Air Warning Company in the Ryukyus Islands in the Philippines. He received several campaign medals.

Mr. Pakiela owned a television repair shop in Buffalo before going to work for Bell Aircraft Corp. He moved to Pittsfield in 1959, where he was employed by GE for 30 years, retiring in 1989 as a supervisor in the quality control department in the ordnance department.

He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church and a member of the GE Quarter Century and Pensioners' clubs. He also was a member of the General Electric Athletic Association and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 448 of Pittsfield.

He enjoyed bowling, boating, fishing and playing golf, and was a fan of the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots.

His wife, the former Mary Ann Szkotnicki, whom he married July 12, 1947, at St. John Gualbert Church in Cheektowaga, N.Y., died Oct. 2, 2000.

He leaves a daughter, Carol A. Newberry of Pittsfield, and a sister, Dolores Lewandowski of West Falls, N.Y. Mr. Pakiela's brother, Alvin K. Pakiela, died Feb. 4, 1995.

A funeral with military honors will take place Wednesday, April 10, at 9 from FLYNN & DAGNOLI-BENCIVENGA FUNERAL HOME, 5 Elm St., followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at Sacred Heart Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Pittsfield. Calling hours at the funeral home will be tomorrow, April 9, from 4 to 8. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Jimmy Fund in care of the funeral home.
