Dr. Mamonas was assistant resident and chief resident of urology at Albany (N.Y.) Medical School from 1948 to 1950. In 1950, he established a urology practice in Pittsfield and later, with seven other physicians, built the East Street Medical Building. He was president of the Berkshire County Medical Society in 1962 and built the Urology Building, the first specialty medical building in Pittsfield, in 1966.

In 1967, he became chief of surgery at Berkshire Medical Center and, from 1972 until 1974, was chief of staff. He was a consultant and educator in urology at the University of Massachusetts from 1979 to 1982.

He had been a member of the Berkshire County and Massachusetts medical societies, the American Medical Association and the New England Urological Association since 1950. He also was a member of Rotary International, Crescent Lodge of Masons, the Berkshire Hills Country Club and the Country Club of Pittsfield. He was awarded the Paul Harris Fellowship and David B. Kagan Award by the Rotary for service above self.

He was a member of the Orleans Coffee Club, the Cape Cod Men's Club, the Boston University Alumni Club and several golf courses. He was president of the Parkinson's Group of Cape Cod for five years and president of the Sheep Pond Beach Association, and active in health care and health insurance reforms.
