Paul F. Smith

Paul F. Smith, 82, of 22 Whittier Ave. died yesterday morning at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in Pittsfield on Aug. 30, 1919, son of Harry A. and Mary Ellis Smith, he graduated in 1937 from Pittsfield High School.

A Navy veteran of World War II, he served in the Pacific theater.

Mr. Smith was employed with GE and graduated from its drafting apprenticeship course. He became the drafting training instructor in 1951 and transferred to Holyoke, where he served as the drafting supervisor from 1951 until 1962, while living in South Hadley Falls. He was promoted to the position of manager of documentation control from 1973 until 1983. He retired in June 1983 with 46 years of combined service.

A communicant of St. Teresa's Church, he enjoyed playing golf and was an active member of the GE Athletic Association, where he had served on the board of directors. He enjoyed fishing and bowling, and was an accomplished woodworker. He taught adult education classes in woodworking and was proud of his dual citizenship from Ireland.

His wife, the former Frances I. Volin, whom he married June 13, 1942, in St. Mark's Church, died Nov. 8, 2001.

He leaves a son, Peter M. Smith of Hubbardston; two daughters, Patricia A. VanBramer of Windsor Locks, Conn., and Suzanne Smith of Andover; a sister, Margaret T. Smith of Pittsfield, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Calling hours at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME will be Friday from 4 to 7. The funeral will be Saturday at 8:15 from the funeral home, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 9 at St. Teresa's Church by the Rev. John J. Varley, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to Alzheimer's Research in care of the funeral home.
