Joseph J. "Jose" Fitzgerald Jr., 55, of 155 15th Place, Holly Hill, Fla., formerly of Pittsfield, died March 7 at Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach, Fla., of a pulmonary embolism that developed while he was recovering from injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident in Daytona Beach on March 1.
Born in Pittsfield on Oct. 19, 1946, son of Rosetta Berger Fitzgerald and the late Joseph J. Fitzgerald Sr., he was a 1964 graduate of Pittsfield High School. He attended Lowell Technological Institute prior to his enlistment in the Navy, in which he served from 1967 to 1971. He was assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Mispillion, which patrolled off the coast of Vietnam. Following his honorable discharge, he moved to California, where he earned an associate in arts degree from Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa.
A former Pittsfield firefighter, Mr. Fitzgerald moved to Florida in the early 1990s after retiring from the Fire Department, which he joined in 1979.
A licensed real estate broker, he worked in Pittsfield with Coldwell Banker and was associated with several real estate agencies in Florida.
Mr. Fitzgerald was an avid motorcyclist and a member of the Red Knights, an international motorcycle club comprised of firefighters. He also was an accomplished guitarist and a skilled welder. A hunter and life member of the National Rifle Association, he also enjoyed fishing in salt and fresh water.
In addition to his mother of Pittsfield and South Daytona, Fla., he leaves two brothers, Michael E. Fitzgerald, a Pittsfield Police sergeant, and John K. Fitzgerald of Pittsfield; a sister, Maureen P. Fitzgerald of Stephentown, N.Y., and his fiancee, Shirley Furcinite of Stephentown and Holly Hill, Fla.
