Sister Aloysius Marie
March 20, 2002
Sister Aloysius Marie, 99, formerly known as Grace E. Tierney, a native of Pittsfield, died yesterday in Mont Marie Health Care Center in Holyoke.
Born in Pittsfield, daughter of Edward F. and Mary E. Ryan Tierney, she attended local schools and the Normal School of Our Lady of the Elms in Chicopee.
She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield from St. Mark Parish and was in the 77th year of her religious life. After entering the convent, she earned an associate's degree in business from Our Lady of the Elms College, and taught in the Pittsfield parochial schools.
She also taught at St. Joseph's in North Brookfield, and at Holy Family and Cathedral High School in Springfield. She served as principal and superior at St. Thomas' in West Springfield.
She retired in 1982 to Mont Marie, where she was admitted to the Mont Marie Infirmary in 1989, and the Mont Marie Health Care Center in 1993.
She leaves many nieces and nephews.
My Grand-Aunt Grace was a truly wonderful person and quite a character!
My older brother, who lives in Northampton, MA used to visit her and said, near the end she had lost the use of her legs, but she was sharp as ever!
She definitely was one of God's sweetest gift!
I love her and miss her, even almost 14 years later!
