Shirley J. Bookless

Shirley Janet Bookless, 83, of 23 Foote Ave. died Monday at home.
Born in Springfield on Jan. 11, 1919, daughter of Nathan and Sara Bass Lazerus, she attended schools there and was a 1935 graduate of the High School of Commerce in Springfield, where she majored in English.
Mrs. Bookless was employed as a bookkeeper at the Federal Tea Co. in Springfield. She moved to Pittsfield in 1941, where she held several bookkeeping and retail positions, including Textiles on North Street for 11 years. She also was the bookkeeper for her husband's business, Maria's Submarine and Grinder Shop.
She was a member of the Knesset Israel Synagogue, its Sisterhood and Hadassah. She enjoyed poetry, art, opera, travel and walking, and had traveled to Israel in 1976.
She leaves her husband, Max I. Bookless, whom she married Aug. 24, 1941; a son, Bruce L. Bookless of Naples, Fla.; two daughters, Maxine B. Bookless of Boston and Nan Bookless Eagleson of Pittsfield, and a brother, Irving Lazerus of Dallas. She is predeceased by a brother, Vernon Lazerus of Huntsville, Texas.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at Knesset Israel Synagogue, 16 Colt Road, with Rabbi David J. Small, spiritual leader, officiating. Burial will follow in Knesset Israel Cemetery, Peck's Road, Pittsfield. Calling hours will be at 23 Foote Ave., Thursday evening, from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, from 1 to 4 p.m., and Sunday, from 1 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires, Elder Services of Berkshire County, or the charity of one's choice in care of DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME.
