John Schermerhorn

John W. Schermerhorn, 88, of 1629 Blue Heron Lane, Fernandina Beach, Fla., formerly of 176 Columbus Ave., died Thursday at home.

Born in Jersey City, N.J., on Oct. 19, 1913, son of William and Rachel McGee Schermerhorn, he attended schools there and moved to Pittsfield in 1946.

He served in the Army during World War II in the European Theatre, where he was wounded and received the Purple Heart.

Mr. Schermerhorn was employed as a maintenance worker for 24 years with the United States Postal Service in Pittsfield, retiring in 1978.

He was a communicant of St. Michael's Church in Fernandina Beach, and he enjoyed model railroading.

His wife, the former Margaret M. Volin, whom he married April 19, 1947, died Aug. 19, 1998.

He leaves three sons, John W. Schermerhorn of Encinitas, Calif., Joseph M. Schermerhorn of Dubois, Wyo., and James F. Schermerhorn of Chattanooga, Tenn.; three daughters, Jane Markessinis of Rutland, Vt., Anne M. Schermerhorn, with whom he resided, and Margaret McNeil of Fernandina Beach; eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be held Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m. at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME. Funeral services will be held Friday at 8:15 a.m. from the funeral home, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. at St. Agnes' Church, with the Rev. John Koonz, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Pittsfield. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to St. Agnes' School in care of the funeral home.
