Richard A. Bailey

Richard Albert Bailey, 85, of Columbia, S.C., a native of Pittsfield, died Friday at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.
Born on March 28, 1916, son of Albert C. and Susan Webster Bailey, he attended local schools.
During World War II, he was in the intelligence section of the National Guard and was a section leader for the civil defense in Pittsfield.
He moved to Columbia in 1957 and was employed as a manufacturing engineer with GE/Mepco/ Electra for a total of 46 years, retiring in 1981.
He was a past vice president of the Offbeat Organ Club, and enjoyed playing golf.
He and his wife, Rita A. Bailey, were married 58 years.
Besides his wife, he leaves four daughters, Sheila Myers, Mary Pat Irwin, Maureen Carter and Laurie Melton, all of Columbia; a son, Richard Bailey of Richmond, Va.; two sisters, Carol Harris of Pittsfield and Geraldine Alderton of Honolulu, and seven grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister, Jean Massimiano.
Services for Richard Albert Bailey, 85, were March 18, 2002, at 11 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park Annex. Memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph's Catholic Church Building Fund, 3600 Devine St., Columbia, S.C. 29205. He is also survived by three sons-in-law, Walter Irwin, Art Carter and Chip Melton.
