Francis C. Hanny

Francis Carroll Hanny, 83, of 140 Melbourne Road died Saturday at Berkshire Medical Center after a short illness.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Feb. 5, 1919, son of Francis J. and Regina Phelan Hanny, he was raised by his stepmother, Genevieve Dyckman Hanny, after his mother died in 1929. He was a 1937 graduate of Richmond Hill (N.Y.) High School. He moved to Pittsfield in 2001.
He enlisted in the Merchant Marine, where he served as an engineer on military transport vessels in every theater of World War II. In 1945, his ship, the USS John R. Park, was torpedoed in the northeast Atlantic. Following the war, he was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Maritime Service, where he served as a marine engineer and ship's officer until 1948. He also served as an officer with the New York Guard.
Mr. Hanny was employed by Sperry Gyroscope in Brooklyn until 1943. Following the war, he was employed by GE for 29 years as an engineer in Schenectady, N.Y., and in Windsor, Conn. In the early 1950s, he was associated with the development of the sodium-cooled nuclear power plant for the submarine Sea Wolf. He retired in 1979.
He was a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and the Institute of Nuclear Materials Management, and the GE Elfun Society. He took professional development courses through GE at Cornell and Michigan State universities.
Following his retirement, he and his wife moved to their farm in Romulus, N.Y., where he raised cattle and was active in politics. He served as Romulus town justice from 1984 to 1987. They later lived in Seneca Falls, N.Y.
Mr. Hanny was a communicant of St. Mark's Church.
He leaves his wife, the former Ellen Mary "Eileen" Morris, whom he met and married in Dublin, Ireland, on Sept. 2, 1947.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Frank C. Hanny of San Francisco; two daughters, Marion Hanny Grant of Richmond and Andrea J. Hanny of Schenectady; a sister, Katherine H. Bottie Stirber of Barrington, Ill., and a grandson.
The funeral will be private. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice. DERY FUNERAL HOME is in charge of arrangements.
