Walter A. Britten

Walter A. "Bud" Britten, 62, of 95 Strong Ave. died Saturday evening at Berkshire Medical Center after a long illness.

Born in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., on Aug. 9, 1939, son of John H. and Jeanne Dunlavey Britten, he attended school there and was a 1958 graduate of Saratoga Springs High School. He moved to Pittsfield in 1969.

He was a Marine Corps veteran and served at Guantanamo Bay during the Cuban missile crisis.

Mr. Britten was employed by GE as head of the material management branch at naval ordnance on Plastics Avenue for 35 years, retiring in 1990 because of ill health. He also had worked in Washington for the Naval Department Special Projects Office.

He was a communicant of St. Teresa's Church and a member of Charles Persip American Legion Post 68. He coached hockey at the Boys' Club in Pittsfield and Lenox for more than 10 years. He enjoyed golfing and going to beaches.

He and his wife, the former Nancy H. Stevens, celebrated their 38th wedding anniversary Jan. 8.

Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Michael J. Britten of Northampton and John A. Britten of Hinsdale; two sisters, MaryEllen "Sue" Carvalho and Patricia MacDermid, both of Saratoga Springs, and two granddaughters.

Calling hours will be tomorrow, March 19, from 4 to 7 at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME. The funeral will be Wednesday at 9:15 at the funeral home, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 at St. Teresa's Church by the Rev. John J. Varley, pastor. Burial will follow in Greenridge Cemetery in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to Berkshire Medical Center in care of the funeral home.
