George Howland

George W. "Sliver" Howland, 86, died Saturday at Berkshire Medical Center. He had resided at Mount Greylock Extended Care Facility for 1 1/2 years.

Born in Stillwater, N.Y., on April 16, 1915, son of Arthur E. and Mary Roberts Howland, he attended school there. He moved to Pittsfield in 1996.

Mr. Howland was employed by GE in Schenectady, N.Y., for 39 years in the large motor generator department. He retired in 1980. He formerly owned the Beaver Lodge Hunting Club, and did sign and storefront paintings in Stillwater.

He was a member of Stillwater United Presbyterian Church, the Montgomery 504 Mason Lodge of Stillwater and the Stillwater Rod & Gun Club. He bowled in the Stillwater mixed bowling league.

His wife, the former Anne Elizabeth Butt, whom he married Feb. 5, 1939, died in 1992.

He leaves two sons, David A. Howland of Slingerlands, N.Y., and Robert G. Howland of Pittsfield; four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 at Christian Assembly Church on Williams Street in Pittsfield, with Pastor Dean Nowotny officiating. Burial will be in Stillwater Union Cemetery, Stillwater, N.Y., at a later date. Calling hours will be tomorrow, Tuesday, from 4 to 7 at WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 220 East St., Pittsfield, Mass. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Christian Assembly Church in Mr. Howland's memory.
